South Bend Redevelopment Commission
Rescheduled Regular Meeting - April 13, 1989
6. NEV DMINE.SS (Cont.)
b. Continued...
:lopment, our Plan recoxmiends
.isition of severely deteriorated
iercial buildings, relocation of
nesses, demolition of the structures,
assembly of the land for new
:lopment - for the new housing and
ercial development.
At the same time, we are also
recomvxkling that several of the
buildings in the area be acquired and
rehabilitated and reused for new
businesses and businesses relocated from
buildings to be demolished. The WWCRP
and South Bend Heritage Foundation have
already begun working with one merchant
to relocate in the area. The buildings
in this category of acquisition and reuse
lude the two commercial buildings on
thE northwest corner of Elm and
Wa.chington. Elm Street
is the further eastern boundary on that
map on the far right. We are
recamvending that the two cc miercial
buildings on the northwest corner be
retained, the Tudor style building, which
is actually three separate storefronts on
the northwest corner of Walnut and
Washington, the two buildings on the
southwest corner of Walnut and
W n, and the former Slutsky Peltz
building along the south side of the 1200
block of Washington. Also included in
this category is the former Sandock
building, which is not indicated on the
map. We recognize that the feasibility
of rehabilitating a particular building
is lependent on the costs of
reh ilitation and locating a developer.
In a case of the Sandock building, with
Ci support, an engineering study has
-13-
