I
think we have the overlay that summarizes
those strengths and positive conditions.
With financial support from the City we
wete able to hire an urban planning firm
frcm Chicago, called Trkla, Pettigrew,
Alan and Payne. And with their technical
assistance, a study was done to determine
what some of the strengths and assets, as
well as weaknesses and negative
corditions, of the neighborhood are. And
these findings are presented now.
The assets of the neighborhood include
thE following: active neighborhood
ressidents and merchants; recent
r idential improvements in large
sections of the area; closeness to
downtown and the revitalization in
prcgress, there; the historic character of
thE area; the affordable housing that is
a ilable in the Near Westside; the
Prcposed utilization and expansion of the
Oliver Mansion as a major museum facility
in the neighborhood; and the numerous
social service organizations and churches
that add stability to the area, including
the West Washington - Capin Revitalization
Project, South Bend Heritage Foundation,
aro the Near Westside Neighborhood
In addition to taking advantage of the
strmxfths of the neighborhood, our
reommiendations are designed to address
the negative conditions that currently
affoat the living and working environment
t Near Westside and detract from the
quality of life in our area.
egative conditions include:
and severely deteriorated
of
space.
