South Bend edevelopment Commission
Regular Mee ing - January 4, 1932
4. COMMUNI ATIONS (continued)
Mr. Sporleder continues...
traditions our lives will be as shakey as the "Fiddler
on the Roof". Change is here for our downtown but let's
keep it even more vital by carrying out the new tempered
and linked with those resources of the past that are sig-
nifican and carry the real potential for many more years
of usef 1 life.
I recall that Mayor Parent, in a note to you some two
years ago, stated two basic factors on which the decision
to demolish should rest. These still hold today. 1) Is
there a clear need to demolish this building? and 2) Is
there a clear alternative for the site, which includes a
feasib4 definitive financial plan with a reasonably cer-
tain fu ding source?
TRANSPO does not require the 67' x 132' corner. Clearly
there is no clear need and what is the big rush to get it
down right now? Let's preserve and - continue to use the
Odd Fellows Building right in the heart of South Bend.
Let's showcase our spirit in economically and responsibly
tying in the old with the new!
The req est of the public, the Historic Preservation
Commission, and the Common Council of the City of South
Bend ar before you. The requests and supporting data are
attache l. Redevelopment Commissioners, withdraw your
instructions, the notice to proceed, to the demolition
contrac or on the Odd Fellows Building. I would appreciate
your he p and action on this matter. Thank you very much.
Mr. Nim z asked the Commissioners if there were any ques-
tions t ey wanted to ask of Mr. Sporleder. Mr. Nimtz
also asked Mr. Butler whether any action was required on
the letter from Mr. Sporleder.
Mr. But er replied that no action was required and that
the Comiission is in a position to do whatever it chooses.
Mr. Nim z directed that the communications be received
and pla ed on file.
5.
