South Bend Commission
Regular Mee edevelopment
ing - December 4, 1981
9. NEXT COOMISSION MEETING (continued)
when I said that as a legal matter, if the decision is to
demolis the building, that has to be done, it has to be
done now. It can't wait a month.
Mr. Nim z: Mr. Robinson.
Mr. Robinson: I have one question. Who will make the de-
cision as to whether they do it with explosives or whether
they knock it down with a headache ball?
Mr. McMahon: At a $102,000 low bid, that's the bid that we're
acting on, which does not have explosives. They would have
to come back to us.
Mr. Butler: Are you willing to pay a premium for that?
Mr. Robinson: Question - could we maybe sell tickets for
$10 a throw, invite everybody, we might make that 50 grand
for people who want to see a building come down with ex-
plosives.
Mr. Nim z: I was in Indianapolis when the Lincoln Hotel
went down. Councilman Voorde, I didn't mean to shut you
off, but I learned that once you began opening bids you'd
better stay on that trolley so on. We would be pleased to
hear from you again, if you wish.
Mr. Voor
speak, b
address
you soul
intentio
Building
quoted.
really i
measure
be very
walkways
pedestri
Mr. Bu tl
itself,
course,
are issu
building
doubled
would, o
e: The horse is already out of the barn, so to
t I would have questioned the $150,000 needed to
he liability. I think there are a number of ways
address liability and protect the City if your
is to reconsider the saving of the Odd Fellows
The $150,000 figure was the very top figure
I have heard as low as $60,000, but if you are
terested in saving the building as a temporary
or much, much less money, even though it wouldn't
ightly, you could put one of those construction
around there, if you were just concerned about
ns getting hit on the head.
!r: It is my understanding that, that in and of
could not be sufficient and also there are, of
:he issues beyond the liability situation. There
?s concerning work that has to be done to the
now in order that the cost of that work not be
is we proceed through the winter. A 90 -day period
course, require that kind of action.
37
