Commission approval requested by.Advisory Board <br />"B' for a non-profit gra nt in the amount of <br />_8,000:00, to Nei hbo -hood Housing Services of <br />a <br />Mr. Johnson: Neighborhood Housing Services of <br />South Bend, Inc. (NHS) is requesting a Non- <br />Profit Group Rehabilitation Grant to support <br />repairs and improvements on a house located in <br />the Northwest area of the City. (740 N. Blaine- <br />Bureau of Housing Estimated Cost: $19,369.13) <br />The availability of a Non - Profit Group Grant <br />reduces the effective cost of repair to NHS, and <br />in turn makes it possible to not only put back <br />into use a property which has stood abandoned <br />for five years, but at the same time allows them <br />to create a homeownership opportunity for a low- <br />income family. <br />Advisory Board "B" of the Bureau of Housing <br />recommends that the Redevelopment Commission award <br />to DES a Non - Profit Group Rehabilitation Grant in <br />the amount of $8,000 for the house listed above, <br />subject to customary presentation of evidence of <br />own rship to the Bureau. <br />The Char recognized Mr.. V. LaMar Wilson, Executive <br />Directo , NHS of South Bend, Inc. <br />Mr. .ilson: We are a private non - profit corporation <br />representing a partnership between local financial <br />institutions, the City of South Bend, and local <br />resi ents throughout the community. We incorporated <br />in March of 1979, and have been operational about <br />2 -22 months. This project at 740 N. Blaine is <br />pret ty significant in that we are concentrating <br />our services and activities in the 700 block of <br />Blaine. We are talking about technical and <br />financial services. 740 is somewhat pivital in <br />turn ng around the 700 block of Blaine because <br />it has been vacant and abandoned for five years. <br />What we would like to do is rehabilitate the house <br />and put it back into use. Our office is based in <br />the neighborhood and we are proud of the commit- <br />ment we -have received from the three partners we <br />are involved with. We would like to use the house <br />at 70 N.
