South Bend Redevelopment Commission
Regular Meeting - August 3, 1979
FLOOR DISCUSISI
The Chair recognized Mr. James Lahey, a representative of the
Faith - Hope - Charity Chapel.
Mr. James Lahey: Thank you Mr. President, and members of the
Commission. My purpose for being here today is to simply reacquaint COMMENTS MADE
the Commission with the problem that we have on our hands. We are BY MR. LAHEY
located presently in the redevelopment area between Washington and CONCERNING
Jefferson on Michigan. We hear that shot ball falling on all sides RELOCATION OF
of us here and we know that certainly in an immediate period of FAITH -HOPE
time it is going to hit us; and we don't want to cause any problems. CHARITY CHAPEL
The Commission has tried to be fair with us, and we have made efforts
to acquire other locations in South Bend. I would just like to en-
courage the Commission to attempt`to locate'us downtown as expeditiously
as they an, so that we are not out of business. We have 300 people
or Bette per day coming into the shopping area. That is all I have
to preset to the Commission °at the present time.
Mr. Nimt Thank you, Mr. Lahey. As you well know, the Commission
is appri ed of the situation, and I think all of us are firmly con -
vinced tat the Chapel is a drawing card and needs to remain downtown.
Particularly, after the news report several weeks ago in the Tribune
of the C apel located out East, and the amount of traffic that it
generates. As you know, I have met with Bishop Manis on this matter.
I think the immediate problem right now, Mr. Lahey, is to relocate
you temp rarity, so that you are happy, the Commission is happy,
and it is convenient to the people who use the facility. I think
that is the immediate problem. I hope that we can possibly meet
with you and Mr. Dick Rosenthall, who is also on the committee,
and with Mr. Kevin Butler and Mr. Carl Ellison to see if we can
solve this problem at everybody's satisfaction. We are certainly
pleased to have you here this morning and we want you to know
that this problem has been mentioned to the Rouse people and
to Gruen & Associates who are working on this whole project.
Mr. Cira: Was there discussion of 'a possible site?
Mr. Nimt : There has been discussion of several possible sites.
Mr. Cira: The one that they did like, what became of that?
Mr. Nimt : It is still available. It is a question of
whether the Chapel should go there, or should we reserve
it for a possible national installation.
Ms. Derb ck: What location are you speaking of?
Mr. Nimt : A location close to Baers.
-10-
