7.(b)NEW BUSINESS. continued:
John Lindstaedt: I think one of the most profound statements I have
heard on this situation in a long time was made by a fellow that I
don't always agree with, but by young Mr. Parent, when he said he would
like to see the deterioration work back into the inner city. So many
people I have talked to, including some of the young people want to
build new homes and I suggest instead of spending forty thousand dollars
for a new home, get one of the old ones, spend five or six thousand
dollars to remodel it and you have a much better place.
Don Wiggins: One of the problems in this area is in financing and I
thi k that needs a new look.
Joh Lindstaedt: Red lining is one of the bad things about the entire
sit ation. I think this is something that has to be worked out with
som of the lending institutions.
Johi Kagel: Mr. Chairman and Commissioners, I know that you are aware
of layor Peter Nemeth's task force on neighborhoods. I was fortunate
to ittend such a meeting for four or five hours at Broadway Christian
Chu ch and -I thought it was well worthwhile. I thought it had to be one
of he best such meetings that I have ever attended, having to do with
neighborhoods and the efforts to reverse this trend of deterioration.
Everyone who was there was in agreement and it was a full house, that
it s probably the first good approach to what they are attempting to do
with all the neighborhoods in the city.
Cha -r: If I might digress for a minutes, just to point out some progress,
the Common Council and the previous administration gave Southhold Res -
tor tions sixty or seventy thousand dollars for loans in the W. Washington
are . Several loans have been made and all you need do is go through that
arei and see that it is coming back. You can't buy a house on West
Washington anymore, property values are going back up along there. We
are now going to start work on Colfax and LaSalle next. This thing will
work, people will be interested in moving back to these old neighbor-
hoods.
John Lindstaedt: That's what we are looking forward to Sir!
(c) In accordance with recommendation of the Southeast Advisory Board,
Commission approval requested for recission of the award of the following
contract:
Contract No. Address
SEC /PR /CS -4/31 630 East Dayton Street
Recommendation for recission was made due to the fact that the structure
is no longer occupied. Contract was awarded to Slatile Roofing and Sheet
Metal Company for a total contract price of $6,245.00.
Mr. Brownell read this item and the Chair asked Mr. Butler if we could
app ove this request.
Mr.
Butler: Ken (Schaller), have you cleared this with Slatile?
CONTRACT
RESCINDED
SOUTHEAST
SECD /PR /CS
4/31
