7. PROGRESS REPORTS (Cont'd
on whether it may be feasible to place a brick wall
around those fountains for protection. Mr. Zackrocki
said it is feasible but that aesthetically our de-
signers may have felt it was not necessary. On
further discussion pertaining to the "ice fountains,"
and the water cascading down the side of the granite
pedestals, Mr. Zackrocki said his experience has been
that the water would adhere to the ice that is forming.
Initially the granite pedestals and the ice it forms
would not cause any oversplash and he didn't feel we
would have any problems with that.
Mr. Dan Akin, our site project engineer, with Clyde
E. Williams & Associates, advised this should be
checked, as he is not sure those particular fountains
were intended to be ice- scoped. He believed the only
fountain the designers had in mind to be "ice - scoped"
was the fountain that consists of three pyramids south
of Western Avenue, as ice fountains and for winter use.
Mr. Akin said he believes the fountains at the garage
and at the old post office building are not "ice foun-
tains" and this should be checked out.
Mr. Lennon recommended to have our staff architect,
Tony Germano, draw a rendering as per discussion,
take a look at it, and perhaps after the first couple
of months of the cold spell see what actually needs
to be done. Commissioners and legal counsel agreed
to this.
In reference to Mr. Kagel's concern, Mr. Kevin J.
Butler, Commission Legal Counsel, advised we wouldn't
want to have an accumulation of ice. The basic deter-
mination is whether or not these fountains are going
to create a hazardous condition during the winter
months, and with respect to the grates now, whether
or not the grates are dangerous and a determination
on this is going. to have to be made.
President Nimtz requested to have the staff architect
look at these fountains with the open grates and whether
a wall around it would be aesthetically correct, etc.
In regards to the Baer's vault that has been leaking,
Mr. Zackrocki said that is being corrected this after-
noon, or Monday morning at the very latest. The re-
presentative is in town today. The mastic has been
delivered and he is personally supervising the install-
ation.
Mr. Akin advised he will have some of the electrical
work inspected on Monday. In electrical testing, they
have found some of the problems.
=[10
