9. INEW BUSINESS (Cont'd <br />d. Plaza Parkway: Commission approval was requested <br />of the final design work on Plaza Parkway (Block 6), <br />subject to HUD, Commission Legal Counsel, Board of <br />Public Works and the Park Department approval. <br />This item was discussed at great length in the prior <br />session of this meeting, with the public present. <br />Mr. John Fisher briefed the Commissioners and audience <br />on the final design work on the Plaza (Block 6). <br />The schematics showed the entranceway with a path con- <br />tinuing to the south, with a brick modular terraced area <br />for sitting. The proposed lighting has been tested with <br />Park Department representatives present for maintenance <br />consideration. There are five different types of light- <br />ing involved: <br />1) Post Top: This has a globe made of a very tough <br />plastic acrylic lens with the photometrics designed <br />that 99% of the lighting goes down. <br />PLAZA PARKWAY <br />(BLOCK 6) <br />FINAL DESIGN <br />WORK APPROVED, <br />R -66 <br />2) Ballard Type: This will be used primarily for ground - <br />cover lighting, 36" high, square, with louvers. <br />3) Ground -Up Lighting: Actually placed in the ground for <br />lighting vegetation. <br />4) Bridge Rail Lighting: This will have a special fixture <br />to light the deck of the pedestrian b r&g`e in wall re- <br />cess. <br />5) Bench Lighting: These will be wall- mounted lights in <br />the deck area in the concrete walls. <br />Lighting on the bicentennial would be post -top lights, <br />12 feet high spotted on 60 -foot centers, so the farthest <br />we would be away from the lights is 30 feet and the mini - <br />mum intensity is 1/2 foot candle generally accepted by <br />all. <br />The curb will be kept in the old Lincolnway as the edge <br />of the path, as it is economical and a decent curb. The <br />sidewalk, concrete posts and railing will be taken out. <br />The railroad bridge was discussed with red paving brick <br />and planting areas, kiosks, benches and drinking water <br />fountain. Future pedestrian access to Columbia Street <br />in the future, with the path continuing south to Monroe <br />Street with sitting areas was shown. <br />The designing has been done around the number of large <br />trees present, as the site has a number of trees which are <br />- 15 - <br />
