1. ROLL CALL (Cont'd
Staff: Mr.
Charles
F. Lennon, Jr.
Mr.
William C. Kent Wilcox
2. PRESENTATIONS TO HONOR 'OUTGOING PRESIDENT, FRED J. HELMEN
M% Lennon advised President Helmen that we had taken the liberty of
i viting Mrs. Fred J. Helmen; daughter, Ms. Patricia H. Simpson; and
g anddaughters, Ms. Carolyn Simpson and Ms. Martha Simpson, to attend
t is meeting, as our guests - -and a surprise to Mr. Helmen. This
p )rtion of the meeting was held shortly before the public session
to not have it noted on the Agenda, and a complete surprise.
A gift was presented by Mr. Lennon on behalf of the Commissioners
and staff, and the many friends- -some here now and others to be
present within the next hour, to Mr. Fred J. Helmen, President of
the Redevelopment Commission:
... plaque and gavel, with the following inscription:
IN RECOGNITION FOR OUTSTANDING SERVICE, SPIRITED
LEADERSHIP AND DEDICATION TO THE CITY OF SOUTH BEND
FRED J. HELMEN
SOUTH BEND REDEVELOPMENT
COMMISSION
DEC., 1958 - SEPT., 1974
f om all of your friends as well as our depth of sincere appreci-
a ion.
SIDENT FRED J. HELMEN:
Briefly, I want to thank you, Chuck, and all of the members
of the Commission. Like I said at the last meeting, it has
been a pleasure to work with you over the past year, and,
as I told you, it is difficult to give a reason to quit.
I enjoyed working with you and working on the various
projects.
Chuck gave some figures on how much money we have gone
through - -$180 million plus. It is a tribute to the group
that we have managed that much money and our records, as
far as I know, are clean. Actually, when you have that
much money and that many people involved on the payroll,
I think it is tremendous. It wouldn't have been possible
if it had not been for the people and the Commissioners,
and a few others' help that I am very grateful for.
To the Press: The Press has treated us tremendously- -and
I am - -and we all very grateful for that, Jeanne.
- 2 -
