10.
IGNATION OF EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, CHARLES "F. LENNON, JR. (Cont'd
1YOR JERRY J. MILLER (Cont'd
I cannot say too much of Chuck Lennon - -he is one of the
most outstanding administrators in the South Bend adminis-
tration, and I know first -hand he will be missed very deeply.
When the Department of Housing and Urban Development and the
Rand Corporation expressed that they.would like to interview
Chuck if I gave my permission, the first thing I said to them- -
if you interview him, you will hire him. He is the best man
to interview.
I will miss Chuck more than any other man in the community- -
he served the cabinet and the people in the South Bend com-
munity without question. He and I have had such a close
relationship, as Chuck has and Fred has.
The Housing Allowance Program is the most important program
that ever came into this community. It expends $170 million
potential dollars to be spent in this community without one
dollar of in -kind contribution as far as local government is
concerned. He is responsible to see that it is successful.
Housing programs all over the nation have been unsuccessful,
and I know that this program will be successful because of
Chuck Lennon.
ES F. LENNON. JR.
I have appreciated the opportunity to work with each of you- -
with the Mayor and his cabinet - -this department, and working
with my staff. You have people of the professional caliber
of Kent Wilcox and others who are in this department who can
keep it functioning while you search for a replacement for
myself.
I will be here in the city and I am offering my services in
any way possible to you, and I appreciate the kind compliments
you have said.
My family and I love this community and plan to stay here the
rest of our lives. It is a great place to live and raise a
family.
Thank you all again very much. I am a better person for
knowing each of you.
AYOR JERRY J.'MILLER'(To President Fred J. Helmen):
I think Fred.Helmen has already been presented a key to some
of the banks! I know how sentimental he is.
