5.
OLD BUSINESS (Cont`d)
Mr. Rausch stated they have attempted to provide Dr. Mooney
with the best possible space that would be in scale with the
mall, not compete with the structural canopies and still meet
the criteria as Dr. Mooney did not design a sculpture that
would fit into Area "J." The consultants have also recommended
the shifting of two large trees to provide even more room for
this sculpture, in Block 5, in front of Robertson's and Penney's.
Mr. ennon gave a copy of -the telephone message from Mr. Phil
Simonds of Environmental Planning and Design received prior
to tie Commission meeting that the Commissioners reconsider and
have the Mooney piece in front of Robertson's and Penney's,
as t eir recommendation is to spread out the three pieces for
a better balance.
This item was previously discussed in the "Executive Session"
of t is Commission meeting, with the public present, at great
leng h.
Mr. henney had objected to the change of the "CONTINUOUS YOU"
b
to moved to the north end of the River Bend Plaza, in meeting
of %y 3, 1974, and is so stated in the minutes.
Mr. 4ade felt it makes more sense to have the sculpture in an
area where more people see it. He is in favor of the idea of hav-
ing it by Robertson's and Penney's, and, in answer to his question,
this piece was built.to be seen.
Mr, Wiggins' opinion was that we need to use this sculpture where
it w ll do the most good - -where it will generate the most interest
and where most people will see it. He stated the sculptures
should be spread out to get the maximum effect, and it is to our
advantage to have it placed where it will be seen by the most
peop e. He is in favor of having it at the best point and having
the ost people see it. It generates people on our. Plaza. If
we m kes it the "people place ", we need to have it seen.
On motion by Mr. Chenney, seconded by Mr. Wiggins and unanimously
carried, the previous motion made by the Commissioners in May 3,
1974 Commission meeting is rescinded, and the "CONTINUOUS YOU"
(Dr. Mooney's sculpture piece) is to be installed in Block 59
in the Robertson - Penney block. This also authorizes moving the
two three or four feet within the planter, or whatever is
nece rees
sary.
c. Canopy Sign Design; Mr. Edwin R. Bauer submitted a CANOPY SIGN
writ en and verbal recommendation from the Sign Review Committee DESIGN APPROVED,
for I ommission consideration and approval of the canopy signs RIVER BEND PLAZA
for he River Bend Plaza.
Mr. auer advised at the request of our Plaza consultants,
Envi onmental Planning & Design, a drawing was submitted indi-
cati g the style of lettering to be used throughout the Plaza area.
It c nsists of an upper and lower case "Helvetica" alphabet, fabri-
7-
