7.
PROGRESS REPORTS (Cont'd)
Three (3) designs are to be selected by the judges
from the scale models of the entries. The awarding
of the sculptural pieces will be made by the Re-
development Commission and will be the first item
on the Agenda, under New Business, in Commission
meeting of February 1, 1974, and the winners an-
nounced. The three winning sculptors each will
receive a commission of $7,,000 and three honorable
mention prizes of $250 each also will be awarded.
The Sculpture Committee, which made the final selec-
tion of judges from an original list of 40 prospects,
comprises: Harold Zisla, associate professor, De-
partment of Fine Arts, Indiana University of South
Bend; Vincenzo Mangione, director, South Bend Art
Center; Edward E. Herrmann,.South Bend commercial
artist; Jeff Rausch, Environmental Planning and
Design, Pittsburgh, Pa., designers of the River
Bend Plaza; and Edwin R. Bauer, director of plan-
ning for the Redevelopment Department. The judges
chosen were recommended by the Sculpture Committee
and approved by the Redevelopment Commission.
The estimated cost is included in the $7,000 com-
mission allotted to the winning sculptors. We
also have $3,000 to date in the Bill Rasmussen
Memorial Fund. We will enter into a contract
with each of the winners and they cannot exceed
the amount of the commission.
2) Construction Schedule Update: Mr. Lennon advised
we have a weekly construction schedule with dis-
tribution to all news media and other interested
parties. These are also published in the South
Bend Tribune, usually the Sunday edition. There
is not much going on now with the exception of
bushhammering on the planter walls, pulling wires
and beginning brick work on planter edging be-
tween Monroe and Western Avenue. We anticipate
getting some of the supports for the canopies
and these will be installed as they are received.
This is about all going on in the Mall construc-
tion.
A monthly construction schedule is also distri-
buted to above individuals and all the downtown
offices and retailers.
- 14 -
CONSTRUCTION
SCHEDULE UPDATE,
R -66
