RUSZKOWSKI, CHIEF OF POLICE <br />Board of Public Works November 14, 2019 <br />City of South Bend, Indiana <br />Honorable Board Members, <br />The South Bend Police Department is requesting Board approval of an agreement with Calibre Press for <br />officer training in the program Read, Recognize and Respond. Course topics during this training include <br />Detecting Deception, Verbal & Non -Verbal Cues, Solutions for Successful De -Escalation, Treating <br />People with Dignity and Respect, and other relevant topics which focus on today's peacekeeper and their <br />ability to effectively evaluate others, and by means of communication, make sound decisions that result in <br />safe and successful resolutions. <br />Calibre Press will come to the South Bend Police Department to conduct the training for the officers as <br />opposed to our officers traveling to receive similar training. The cost of Calibre's training is $6000, or <br />$60 per officer as we plan on 100 officers attending. Similar training by other providers are $325 per <br />officer for De-escalation training and $350 per officer for Deception training plus travel costs.
