Michigan Street in New Carlisle was <br /> built for J. H. Service around 1879. Jeremiah Service was born in the state of <br /> New York in 1$12 moved to Indiana at the age of 22. He settled in New Carlisle <br /> when he operated a store for 30 vears. He then turned his business into fists to <br /> bankina. He is referred to in Chapman 's History of St. Josenh County as a "wPalth)t <br /> pioneer" and a influential member of the community who represented the county in the <br /> star,, legislature for 1 term. The residence built by Service was DiirrhasPd by itc <br /> present owner, James R. Kile in 1973. <br /> This house is located on the Pastern PdgP of NPw rarlic P <br /> significant Italianate style houses in the town and is included in Wilbur Peat ' s <br /> Indiana Houses of the 19th Century. The 2 story brick residence is noted for its <br /> cupola topped by an onion dome, the large double brackets which are echoed on the <br /> cupola & its handsome porch which is located across the entire front of the house <br /> and topped by a balcony for the 2nd story. Double wood columns and a spindle railing <br /> are striking features of the richly embellished porch which_ harmonizes with the design <br /> of the residence.
