A"
4
6. PROGRESS REPORTS
GI
a. Report on NAHRO National Conference. Mrs..Curtis
POI
epresented the local Housing Authority in attending
he NAHRO National Conference, October.8 -11, 1967
t Portland, Oregon, but she so generously shared
ch of her enthusiasm and suggestions with the Re-
UJ evelopment Commission at this time. The Conference
(J) as helpful especially in getting ideas and inspi-
ation for the City of South Bend by hearing about
UJ hat is happening in other cities throughout the
aS ountry. In comparison to other cities, South Bend's"
ous ing program rates v.er y, :h :i g h - :x . The things
at were talked about most at the Conference are
he very things South Bend is either doing or talk -
ng about i. e., Lease Program, Turnkey Program,
0 21-(d)-(3) housing, Diagnostic Survey along with
0 Cher surveys, etc. Mrs.Curtis shared with the Cem-
ission some suggestions for South Bend, such ass
(1) demolition accomplished by the city ir,order to
am non -cash credit on city's 1/3 share, t2) all
ocal agencies involved in housing and urban renewal
should combine into one, (3) attend various and all
city Commission meetings. In conclusion, Mrs. Curtis
is glad this . ,.ommission belongs to NAHRO, and that
ach Commissioner reads the Housing Journal. It was
er suggestion that each Commissioner obtain a
ublication entitled, "The Commissioners' Handbook"
b. keport on Diagnostic Survey, LaSalle Park, R -57.
efore giving his report, Mr. Sam Winston indicated
hat he also had attended the NAHRO National
onference and has prepared a written report which
ill be submitted to the Commission at a later date.
eporting on the Diagnostic Survey, Mr. Winston
first gave a definition of terms used, such as
'Refusals" - contact was made but interviewer was
refused interview, "Break- offs" - interview was not
completed because of interruption, "Non- interviews"
went to home several times without making contact,
01 Addresses unknown" - families had relocated them -
elves and could not be found. A total of 81% of
11 families in the LaSalle Park Project, R -57,
have been completed for the Diagnostic Survey. In
LLJ umbers there have been 649 families inside the
V) project area, and 80 families outside the project
area, making the total number of families contacted
UJ 729. Mr. Winston had also computed the informa-
CL. lion by street names which illustrated a clear
Cb picture of what had been accomplished. The Notre
ame Research Laboratory is now in the process of
putting this information on cards to run through
G he computer, and the first run should be completed
0 very soon. By the next Redevelopment Commission
meeting, the entire process should be completed.
c The Referral Service is moving along, and about 12
ontacts a day are being accomplished.
-5-
REPORT ON
NAHRO NATIONAL
CONFERENCE
FOR 1967
REPORT ON
DIAGNOSTIC
SURVEY, LASALLE
PARK, R -57
