6. PROGRESS
REPORTS
a.
Central Downtown Project R-66. The Part I
J
CENTRAL DOWN-
Application
has been submitted to the Chicago federal
TOWN PROJECT,
office
for review, and recent telephone conversations
R-66
with th
federal representative indicate the review
is prog
essing satisfactorily. Extra copies of the
Applica
lasis
ion have been received and are being distri-
buted i
a way that will best.serve the community.
The sta.
f will have about 5 copies to be released on
a loan
only. Mr. Grant Lewis entered into a
discussion
of the downtown plans, and requested that
the staff
seek consultation with the Architectural
Section
of Notre Dame. Mr. Wiggins gave assurance
that everything
possible would be done to enhance
the river
front, which is the point in question, and
that the
staff and Commission would continue to be
cooperative
with Notre Dame.
b.
LaSalle Park Project, R-57. The staff Ins
LASALLE PARK
acquired
900/6 of all buildings scheduled for acquisi-
PROJECT, R-57
tion. A
few parcels remain in condemnation proceedings.
The proposed
rent supplement housing is essential for
providing
the housing resource for large, low income
families.
The demolition contractor, Dore Wrecking
Company ompany
is working in the area again, but all build-
ings selteduled
to be demolished cannot be released until
such time
as the Redevelopment Department holds a
clear title
and the properties are vacant. Definite
progress
has been made in the area of rehabilitation.
The staff-is
diligently pursuing new ways and methods
to accelerate
loan processing for rehabilitation
work.
The staff is presently working with about 35
property
owners. In addition, 30 property owners are
rehabilitating
their properties without financial
assistance.
Meetings are being held regularly in
the site
office with owners of property scheduled for
rehabilitation,
and in this way an understanding of
the rehabilitation
process is reached. The staff is
endeavoring
to put more initiative on the property
owner,
and consequently those showing initiative are
first helped.
c.
Industrial Expansion Project, R-56. The 'Part
INDUSTRIAL
II requirements
have been completed and will be sub-
EXPANSION
mitted
to the Chicago federal office in about 10 days.
PROJ.1 R-56
The staff
feels that acquisition of properties can
begin in
late February.
-5-
