The two
most important issues that typically need to be resolved when constructing a project within railroad jurisdiction are:
® Direct coordination with the railroad
2. Communication with their onsite representatives
According to the most recent available plan sheets, this project will be required to work with the Norfolk Southern Railroad
(NSRR).
UNITED has extensive experience in managing projects which are directly impacted by the various railroads. UNITED has
designed, inspected, and managed numerous projects which require our personnel to work directly with railroads and
their representatives. Some examples of projects involving railroad coordination are: Shadeland Avenue and Post Road
Rehabilitation projects in Indianapolis, Avon Avenue Bridge in Avon, and CR 200 in Columbus.
Our recent experiences have taught us that coordination will be required for all contractor equipment crossings and
material deliveries.
A few major coordination issues will include:
➢ Any railroad drainage ditches must remain open and functional throughout construction.
➢ All means and methods of work performed within the project site must conform
to railroad standards.
➢ A railroad representative requires 72 hours advanced notice and a flag person
must be scheduled two weeks in
advance.
COST -CONTAINMENT
Project Cost Control - Un!Aed's Pan of Acdorli
Keep change orders below 3°i° UNITED will research all claims and will
Presents Alicia with solutions instead of
help provide effective solutions
problems
Quick turnaround on Shop Drawings and Identify all required documents and work
Keeps construction on schedule and
Approvals with the contractor to deliver submittals
eliminates potential construction delays
ahead of schedule
Eliminate construction delays Solve construction related issues at the
Reduces the time South Bend staff has to
project level through communication and
commit to project -related concerns
information
Protect the project budget Verify all project quantities weekly
South Bend will know where the budget
and discuss at all progress meetings,
stands at all times, empowering city
especially major items such as sub -base,
representatives to make informed
bituminous HMA items, and PCCP
decisions
Coordination with railroad and utilities UNITED will assist the contractor
Protects the project schedule by making
with coordination efforts and invite
sure conflicts or project impacts are
all impacted utilities and NSRR
discovered early and resolved quickly
representatives to all progress and
coordination meetings
LETTER OF INTEREST TO PROVIDE PROFESSIONAL SERVICES I UNITED CONSULTINGPAGE 8
