South Bend Redevelopment Commission
Rescheduled Regular Meeting -November 2, 2007
6. NEW BUSINESS
A. Public Hearing
(1) continued...
afraid to take on the university; we have
taken on the State of Indiana to keep State
Road 23 from dividing our neighborhood like
it does out by Martin's. We will not have the
road come down the middle of our
neighborhood and divide it like that. So, the
neighborhood council got together and really
stopped that process. We want it back on the
table now because it is fine. We urge you, as
a neighborhood, to approve this because it is
vital to revitalization of the Northeast
Neighborhood. Thank you.
SUSAN MAHONEY, I live two blocks east
of Notre Dame and I have lived here for 15
years. I agree with her (Ms. Taylor) that
gentrification not happen. My daughter lives
just off of Eddy, and it has a neighborhood
feel to it. Yes, the houses are right up to the
street and some aren't in good order but, the
people that are living there are trying to keep
them in good shape. It might not be
something that everyone might want to live
in, but it is affordable; so, I would hate to see
all of that ripped out and put in for more high
income people. So, that assured me. I am also
concerned that this project not take a lot of
focus off development downtown, like for
instance, University Park Mall many years
ago took all the shopping out there and
everything in Mishawaka and South Bend
were a blighted area for 20-25 years or more.
So I would hate to see this project to harm to
downtown South Bend. So, those are my two
issues.
18
