AGENDA REVIEW SESSION �- JULY 18, 2012 52 <br />The Board of Public Safety met in the Public Agenda Session at 8:07 a.m. on Wednesday, July 18, <br />2012, with Board President Patrick D. Cottrell, and Board Members Eddie Miller, John Collins, and <br />Luther Taylor present. Board Member Laura Vasquez was absent. Also present were Police Chief <br />Charles Hurley, Fire Chief Steve Cox, and Board Attorney Andrea Beachkofsky. <br />The meeting was held in the Board of Public Works Conference Room, 13th Floor County City <br />Building, South Bend, Indiana. <br />CHANGES TO THE AGENDA <br />Ms. Beachkofsky stated the Board does not need to set a Hearing date in the Regular meeting; that <br />can be done during the Executive Session. She noted that since there are so many individual's <br />schedules to work around, she would like it removed from the agenda and dealt with during the <br />Executive Session. <br />Fire Chief Steve Cox stated the Mayor will be attending the regular meeting to pin the badges on the <br />firefighter's being promoted. He suggested that since the Police Department has two (2) promotions <br />also, both the Fire and Police promotions be moved to the first and second items on the agenda so the <br />families of the officers won't have to wait. <br />Board members discussed the following items from the agenda: <br />- Monthly Statistical Analysis — Fire Department <br />Chief Steve Cox, Fire Department, stated the County still is under a burn ban. He stated over <br />the last month or two (2), grass fires are up nearly 400% due to the exceptionally dry <br />conditions. Chief Cox noted that those numbers are out of the ordinary for this time of year, <br />but not unexpected. <br />- Retirements — Fire Department <br />Board of Safety Clerk, Linda Martin, stated she would like to make note of the <br />accomplishments of one of the retirees, Timothy Janowiak. She stated he was responsible for <br />getting the Fire Fighter's Memorial built in Seitz Park, along with the creation of the <br />Firefighter's Blues Festival. She noted the first project he worked on was the purchase ofthe <br />first Fire Safety House from the Blues Festival funds. Ms. Martin stated his nrnndect nrnieet <br />was when the funds from the Firefighter's Blues Fest were used to send a child from <br />Memorial's Pediatric Cancer Ward to Disney World. Board member Luther Taylor agreed <br />and stated he was the Fire Chief when Mr. Janowiak came on the department, and he hit the <br />ground running as the person in charge of Special Projects. <br />- Promotions — Fire Department <br />Mr. John Collins stated that both individuals being promoted today, Joseph Galea and <br />Timothy Lancaster, are good people that will serve the Department well. <br />- Monthly Statistical Analysis — Police Department <br />Police Chief Charles Hurley stated almost all of the statistics are down this month, but most <br />notably there is a significant decrease in burglaries. He noted he likes to give credit to his <br />department for doing a good j ob in decreases in crime, but he also acknowledges that they are <br />responsible for any increases. <br />ADJOURNMENT <br />There being no further <br />adjourned at 9:47 a.m. <br />1 <br />business to come before the Board, Mr. Cottrell declared the meeting <br />BOARD OF PUBLIC SAFETY <br />Eddie Miller, Member <br />
