In a status report issued on January 6, 2001, the Insurance Institute for Highway <br />Safety (IIHS) reported the following: <br />Almost 10,00O occupant deaths occur each year in side impact crashes. <br />Head injuries cause more than half of these deaths. <br />38 percent of car occupant deaths occur when a pickup or SUV strikes the car. <br />The IIHS has conducted side impact test to the requirements of FMVSS 214 with <br />the following enhancement: The "bullet" vehicle's bumper is 12 inches higher <br />to represent a SUV or pickup. <br />
