i <br />Pole and wire inspector reported as follows,on light petitions: - <br />There is now six carolina Poplar trees on Portage Avenue five trees <br />south of queen Dteet One tree north of Queen Street. Cut down poplar trees and there will <br />be betwee light. <br />Light now at corner of Grace.Street and Olive Street should be reset <br />to the south end, or placed on the east, side of Olive Street, also the alley at the rear of <br />the church is a private alley, I beg to recommend that no light be placed, the church <br />should provde lights. Same approved. <br />Renewal certificate of Harvey Hager for $1,000.00 Excavation bond <br />approved.. <br />The following permission was granted to the H. G. Christman Company <br />for to construct and maintain a single track siding across Calvert Street immediately west <br />and along side of alley vest of Main Street. <br />To the Honorable Board of Public Works, <br />South Bend, Indiana. <br />Gentlemen: - <br />The undersigned, H. Q. Christman Company, a corporation o:' this City, , hereby <br />and by these presents make application and petition to your Honorable Body for the right and <br />privilege to construct and.maintain a single.track sieving a cross_Calver Street <br />immediately west and along side of the alley west of Main Street. . <br />This siding is -to be constructed off of and from the main line of the P. C. <br />C. & St. L. Railroad, the total length of said siding to be four hundred eighty six (486) fe, <br />feet from its connection with the main line at switch point and three hundred fifty two <br />(352) feet from the point of clearance. -The siding will be constructed entirely upon <br />the private right of way of the P. C. C. & St. L. Railroad, except only where it crosses <br />Calvert Street, and it is intended for and will be used bythe H. G. Christman Company <br />for their use and the use df the tenants of the building now in course of construction at <br />hhe south --west corner of Main and Calvert Streets said building to be one hundred sixty- <br />five (165) feet in width and the full depth of Ue lot of one hundred. thirty -two <br />(132) feet, <br />This building is to be occupied by the Weiss-Mueelssel Company wholesale <br />--iiobbers of hardware specialities and toys, and this siding will serve both the Weiss- <br />Jjuessel Company, the tenant o terislCtoiberused byat em on�work�in�thersoutmherin Company* <br />for the delivery of building <br />of the city. <br />There are alread private sidinggs servingmerchants and .industries immediately <br />north of Calvert Street, andthealley whicFi the siding in question parallel has,been <br />v eated in order to more.pro erly serve said firms and individuals. In the construction <br />of the siding in question, it will not be necessary to vacate the alley south of Calvert <br />Street. However, unquestionably, this is a matter that will eventually be done, as <br />industries and merchants are comlAlled to go south to find locations where they can be. <br />served by private sidings. - <br />.After considerable negotiation's, the undersigned were able to induce the P. C. <br />C. & St. L. Railroad Company to construct this siding upon their own private ri ht of <br />wmy, in order to eliminate the necessity at this time for asking the vacation o� the <br />alley, and to that extend co-operate with your Board in only asking for the granting <br />of the right and privilege of constructing said siding across Calvert Street. In a short <br />time other merchants adn industries will purchase the property now occupied by dwelling <br />houses immediately south of Calvert Street, who will unquestionably then petition your <br />Honorable Body for the vacation of the alley so that sidings can be constructed along <br />side of the property to be served, in the same manner as is the pro]perty immediately north <br />of Calvert Street. <br />Attached hereto and made a part of this petition is a blue print, marked <br />Exhibit A, which shows the correct location of the siding shown in yellow on said <br />blue print and the place where it is intended to be constructed and the measurements <br />showing the length of construction. <br />The petitioner hereto also agrees upon the granting of the right herein <br />petitioned for, to maintain the alley in the rear of its premises in good repair and <br />- open to traffic. ° <br />WHEREFORE, your petitions prays that it be granted the right and privilege <br />to construct and maintain said track over and across said Calvert Street at said location <br />as herethbefore specifically set out, tf 11 submitted <br />Respec u y , <br />H.
