Map 4 shows the major arterials and rail lines that serve and define the area.
Several district sub -areas have been formed by these major streets and rail lines:
1. State Road 23 (Prairie Avenue) runs diagonally across the Sample -Ewing
Development Area from its southwestern edge through Rum Village on a
northeasterly route. It merges with Chapin Street to form the western edge
of the Studebaker complex and the eastern edge of the former Oliver Plow
(White Farm) complex before it leaves the project area.
2. Sample Street, a major arterial cuts across the northern edge of the
Sample -Ewing Development Area from the Olive - Sample overpass to its
end at the Cooper Bridge over the St. Joseph River. Sample Street divides
the Studebaker complex into a northern and southern section.
3. Michigan Street, a major gateway into the community and downtown area,
is an arterial which carries an annual average daily traffic count of 17,192
vehicles. This one -way north street pairs with Main Street, a one -way
south major arterial. Michigan Street is a major commercial strip that
reflects the history, conditions, and trends of commercial district
development and change. The inner -city portions of Michigan Street have
deteriorated and are now part of a redevelopment and neighborhood
business district revitalization program. Many vacant, underused and
deteriorated storefronts and vacant lots represent both a revitalization
challenge and opportunity. Michigan Street divides the Southeast
Neighborhood from the Studebaker Corridor.
■ 4. Main Street is the second arterial for the major one -way pair system of
Michigan -Main. Main Street carries an annual average daily traffic count
v , of 13,136 vehicles and serves as a major warehouse /distribution, business
services, light industrial, and wholesaler corridor.
5. Ewing Street treet is located along the southern edge of the Sample -Ewing
Development Area. This arterial originates on the far western edge of the
development area at S.R. 23 (Prairie Avenue) and runs east to the South
Bend - Mishawaka city limits. Ewing intersects with Miami Street which is
just east of the eastern boundary of the Sample -Ewing Development Area.
Ewing is, for the most part, surrounded by residential development, park,
open space and educational uses, including Riley High School.
t-
1
1
1
-12-
5/21/93
