Lightning Loader will help cleanup crews do a better <br />job. Animal Control is now open seven days a week. <br />They found homes for over 700 animals last year, <br />while also responding to 40% more calls for service. <br />Operation Re-Leaf, in its 15'~ year of sustaiinable <br />operation, collected 72,200 cu. yd of comf~acted <br />leaves. Our crews swept 17,000 miles of street, the <br />equivalent of 17 complete passes through the city. <br />Through our Commnmity Development Division, we <br />provided 435 Building Block grants to beaul.ify our neighborhoods. And our cleanup effort after <br />the massive storm damage in August was exceptional! Ten different departments pitched in to <br />open streets for emergency access, then cleared the debris in record time. We also hired private <br />contractors to help. It was a major undertak~g that required skilled coordination of resources. <br />that <br />They also welcomed Scooter, <br />a new rail panda, to the menagerie. We spent $2,500,000 on <br />construction and maintenance of city parks, iincluding opening the award wuining Southeast Park <br />with its water sprayground. This Spring we will finish clearing land at Fredrickson Park. The <br />former landfill will be capped and a methane recovery system installed. Next we will solicit <br />community support to develop a model envnonmental center at the site, a place for young students <br />to learn about nature and how to repair our mistakes. Belleville Softball Complex, home to <br />national championship competitions last year' and this, will host the 2004 US Woman's Olympic <br />Softball Team for a competition this summer. Attendance was up at our golf courses and at the <br />Cove, and for the 7'~ consecutive year, we were named a Tree City. <br />Our downtown public facilities contniue to put us on the map. They attract visitors to <br />town, help to sell conventions and spur private investment. Century Center held 676 events in <br />2003 with 239,000 attendees, including nine new shows. We have recaptured a large convention <br />Parks & Recreation had another remarkable year. Over <br />1,000,000 people visited Park facilities or participated in special <br />Triathalon at Potawatomi Park. The Zoo <br />A-34 <br />Our teams was up to the effort! <br />
