1956 Construction begins on Broadmoor Shopping Plaza. <br />1960 Talk of a new, multi - million dollar, shopping center at the SE <br />corner of Miami and Ireland. 54 Acres. Neighbors fight the <br />rezoning from residential to commercial. <br />1966 Scottsdale Mall is conceptualized by developers Casto & <br />Skilken, Columbus, OH. "...one of the most modern, all - <br />weather, regional shopping centers in the world... 521,000 <br />SF all year, comfort- controlled shopping center will give the <br />20- county retail trade area its first and Indiana's finest <br />regional shopping center." ($25 million project) <br />1970 Scottsdale Mall developers ask the State Highway <br />Commission to alter the bypass route, moving it slightly to <br />the south to allow additional parking for the mall. State <br />Highway Commission denies the request. Mall developers <br />proceed anyway. <br />1971 Scottsdale Mall breaks ground after a 5'/2 year delay. <br />($12 million project) <br />1973 (Aug 1) Scottsdale Mall opens with great fanfare, 52 stores <br />IL with a total of 102 within 12 months. Anchors: Montgomery <br />Ward, L.S. Ayres, Ayr -Way. $40 million cost; 2,000 jobs <br />created; Builders: Guepel DeMars, Indianapolis. <br />1976 State files to condemn Scottsdale Mall property (south <br />parking plot) in order to acquire it for the U.S. 20 Bypass. <br />Mall files a suit stating that the State did not conduct an <br />environmental impact study as Federal funds regulate. <br />State proceeds with their plans to build the bypass without <br />Federal funds, thus circumventing the rule. Case goes to <br />the U.S. Court of Appeals. <br />1982 Scottsdale Mall undergoes a $500,000 update to their colors <br />by replacing the neutral colors of the 1970's with brighter, <br />more lively colors. <br />1984 TriVest Group purchases the Scottsdale Mall. <br />1988 Scottsdale Mall raises lease rates drastically as 15 year <br />leases expire. 16 stores leave. Fourth anchor rumored to <br />come to Scottsdale. <br />14 <br />
