South Bend Redevelopment Commission
Regular Meeting -February 3, 2006
4. COMMUNICATIONS
() continued...
We installed adequate gas in the kiln room for the
pottery kiln and the bronze melting furnace, and
we upgraded the electric service so the smaller
electric kilns and the sculptors' burnout kiln
could be used. That room now also has a better
exhaust fan, an electric hoist, and a new extractor
fan with hood.
The hot water heaters have been replaced and the
air conditioner has been repaired.
As people walk by the Fire Arts building, it is in
good repair. Along Colfax, the weeds are gone,
replaced with bushes, a brick walk, flowers, and a
couple of large sculptures. The broken windows
have been repaired and painted in bright colors.
We have installed decorative lighting along
Colfax. I now see people walk directly past our
building on their way to lunch, peering in the
windows to admire our artwork.
Bus riders along Sycamore see ouN beautiful Fire
Arts graphic covering the ugly garage doors, and
the two half gates have been combined to create a
single working gate that enables us to leave a
garage door open in hot weather but keep stray
dogs out. Bus riders ogle to see what we're doing
inside. Instead of being an eyesore, the Fire Arts
building has transformed the look of the
neighborhood. We have also created a place to
visit.
FIRE ARTS BRINGS Q UALITY OF LIFE
CHANGES TO SO UTH BEND
Fire Arts Participates in Community Art Events
We have now participated in two Art Beat events,
8
