South Bend Redevelopment Commission
Regular Meeting -February 3, 2006
4. COMMUNICATIONS
() continued...
and the community, plus all the artists and their
friends. Everyone turned up again to paint the
inside. Many hands make light work, and the
potluck made it all fun.
We had no budget for labor, so Fire Artists
worked on the building two evenings a week
(after their day jobs) plus many weekends for
eleven months. Finally, in April 2005, we
declared the building finished and had a
celebratory dinner. There were still
improvements needed, but at last all the areas
were set up and it was possible to create artwork
from start to finish. We had worked very hard
indeed.
First the roof had been patched, basic plumbing
pipes replaced, and the electricity turned on.
This made us secure, and we could plug in our
tools.
It took two days but the gas service crew was able
to locate and fix all the small leaks so we could
pass the pressure test and have the gas turned on.
Only then were we able to check out each of the
furnaces and have them repaired, one at a tine,
as money became available. Our artists worked
the first winter in their winter coats. Now, during
our second winter, we are comfortable.
We added two utility sinks (one for sculptors and
one for potters) and a handicap accessible
bathroom-complete with a Blodgett wall mural!
Electric service was increased to accommodate
all or power tools.
7
