Public Hearings
(3) continued...
additional tools to enable positive
homeownership opportunities, retail
opportunities and support for institutions in
the area. The partnerships that have
developed among neighbors and institutions
are a model for moving forward. This is not
the traditional redevelopment model where
everything in site is cleared and
development starts over. Despite the
blighted designation required, there is strong
fabric in the northeast neighborhood area
and improvements will be built on the
strengths of the neighborhood. The
Development Plan is good for the
homeowners, businesses, institutions and the
City of South Bend. Mayor Luecke
expressed support of Resolution No. 2021
and requested favorable action by the
Commission.
Mr. Jack Roberts, President of the Northeast
Neighborhood Revitalization Organization,
shared history of the NNRO. The NNRO
was formed approximately three years ago
by a combination of not - for - profits in the
community: The University of Notre Dame,
St. Joseph Medical Center, Memorial
Hospital, Madison Center and the City of
South Bend. A considerable amount of
progress has been made working with the
neighborhood and defining who the NNRO
is and who they want to be. These five (5)
organizations are contributing almost $2M
over a five (5) year period to help set up
operations and get revitalization underway.
33
