South Bend Redevelopment Commission
Regular Meeting—February 20, 2004
6. NEW BUSINESS (CONT.)
C. Sample -Ewing Development Area
(1) continued...
feasibility of acquiring them to be included
in the redeveloped industrial park to be
located in Studebaker Area A.
The first property is owned by the New
Jersey, Indiana & Illinois Railroad, a
subsidiary of Norfolk Southern Railway.
The parcel is approximately seven acres in
size and was formerly a staging yard for
freight cars serving the Studebaker
Corporation, and later the operators of the
Allied Products stamping plant. The rail
yard has not seen active service since South
Bend Stamping ceased operations in 1999.
The trackage was disconnected from the
national rail system during late summer
2003. Norfolk Southern Railway has
expressed its intent to remove the railroad
track and associated materials from this
parcel. The new industrial park will have
access to rail service via adjacent trackage.
The second property is owned by Peter
Mullen and Peter Nemeth. The parcel is
approximately one - quarter acre in size. The
parcel is included in the operations of the
Eckler -Lahey lumberyard and serves as a
storage area. It is not contiguous with the
other parcels that make up the Eckler -Lahey
lumberyard.
Staff recommends accepting the proposal
from Hull & Associates, Inc. in the total
amount of $3,153. The properties will be
assessed within thirty (30) days.
C 13
