Redevelopment Commission Meeting
Regular Meeting — August 20, 2004
$12 -16 per hour. The $750,000 of product
that is purchased in southern California
would also be purchased locally.
The Panzica Group is the architect working
with Kay Equipment for design of the
building. Every effort is being made to hide
truck docks and other working areas from
view. The triangle area at the back of the
property has been difficult to work with for
truck traffic and the proposal may ask for
additional land. The building design would
meet the Oliver design standards with brick
front and sides, etc.
Mr. Katz noted that this project would allow
Kay Equipment to continue its business in
South Bend which was started in 1946 and
would remove the impediments to growth
that have limited the company recently.
ILMs. Jones asked if Mr. Katz intended to close
the Plymouth and Los Angeles plants. Mr.
Katz responded that he has already sold the
Los Angeles property that is currently
occupied by Thermo Steam systems. He
intends to move that operation to one of Mr.
Marcus' buildings in 4 -6 weeks. Several
employees will be moving to the South Bend
area from Los Angeles, but other jobs will be
available to area residents. The Plymouth
operation will be moved to South Bend also,
although the current employees will probably
remain with the company. Whatever jobs
will need to be filled, the South Bend
workforce can supply.
The Commission expressed its enthusiasm
for the concepts presented. No action was
required by the Commission at this time.
Staff will continue to work with the
developer to refine the proposal.
13
STAFF WILL CONTINUE TO WORK WITH THE
DEVELOPER TO REFINE THE PROPOSAL.
