South Bend Redevelopment Commission
Regular Meeting — May 20, 2005
6. NEW BUSINESS
A. Tax Abatements
(1) continued...
second will be a church built and the third
will be a traditional Habitat home. South
Bend Heritage request favorable Commission
approval.
Mr. King inquired about the maximum
number of houses that would be clustered in
one area.
Ms. Sobel responded that there will probably
never be more than two (2) on a block.
Ms. Jones asked for clarification of the
statement that the homes will complete the
new center city subdivision of twenty (20)
single- family homes.
Ms. Sobel replied that the homes were
actually adjacent to the new city subdivision.
Ms. Sobel also noted that the new city
subdivision is now totally complete and
100 percent sold out.
Mr. Hunt commented on the importance of
residents moving into Habitat homes being
counseled that after the tax abatement ends,
the taxes will go up and that residents need to
prepare to meet the increased tax obligation.
Ms. Sobel explained that complete
counseling is provided by both the Heritage
Foundation and Habitat for Humanity. In
addition, when financial qualifications are
processed, the applicant is qualified at the
end tax level and is also made aware of what
the future tax obligation will be.
c
