REGULAR MEETINGMAY 23, 2005 Section I. On behalf of all of the citizens of the City of South Bend, Indiana, the Common Council hereby publicly recognizes the 2005 celebration of Juneteenth in our Working Together Works”. community, which will focus on the theme “ th Section II. The Common Council encourages participation in the6 Annual Juneteenth Weekend Celebrationwhich includes a wide variety of activities scheduled for Youth Day on ththth June 17, Family Day on June 18 and Gospel Day on June 19 with these event taking place at the Charles Black Center and the LaSalle Park. Section III . This Resolution shall be in full force and effect from and after its adoption by the Council and approval by the Mayor. stth Derek D. Luecke, Mayor Councilmember David Varner, 1306 Clayton Drive, South Bend, Indiana, made the presentation for this Resolution by first offering his comments and then reading the Resolution in its entirety and asking the City Clerk’s Office to send a copy to the appropriate representatives. A Public Hearing was held on the Resolution at this time. There was no one present wishing to speak to the Council either in favor of or in opposition to this Resolution. Councilmember Varner made a motion to adopt this Resolution by acclamation. Councilmember Dieter seconded the motion, which carried. RESOLUTION NO. 3461-05 A RESOLUTION OF THE COMMON COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SOUTH BEND, INDIANA, PUBLICLY COMMENDING THE MANY JOURNALISTS FROM THE SOUTH BEND TRIBUNE FOR EARNING AWARDS AND HONORS FROM THE INDIANA CHAPTER OF THE SOCIETY OF PROFESSIONAL JOURNALISTS FOR JOURNALISM EXCELLENCE Whereas, the Common Council of the City of South Bend, Indiana notes that the Society of Professional Journalists was founded in 1909 and is the nation’s largest not-for-profit journalism organization with over 13,500 journalists who “believe that public enlightenment is the forerunner of justice and the foundation of democracy” ; and Whereas, the Society of Professional Journalists believe that the duty of the journalist is to seek truth and provide a fair and comprehensive account of events and issues, while serving the public with thoroughness, honesty and professional integrity; and Whereas, the South Bend Common Council proudly recognizes the following journalists stnd from the South Bend Tribune who earned eight (8) 1 place awards, three (3) 2 place awards rd and two (2) 3 place awards for their work in the “2004 Best in Indiana Journalism” by the Indiana Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists held on April 29, 2005, namely: 4
