Luecke, Mayor <br />Councilmember Ann Puzzello, 1247 E. LaSalle Avenue, South Bend, Indiana, made the <br />presentation for this Resolution by first offering her comments and then reading the Resolution <br />in its entirety and presenting it to Susan Walker. <br />A Public Hearing was held on the Resolution at this time. <br />There was no one present wishing to speak to the Council either in favor of or in opposition to <br />this Resolution. <br />Ms. Walker thanked the Council for this honor and stated that she continues to be humbled by <br />this award. <br />Councilmember Kelly made a motion to adopt this Resolution by acclamation. Councilmember <br />Dieter seconded the motion which carried. <br />RESOLUTION NO. 3460-05 A RESOLUTION OF THE COMMON <br /> COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SOUTH <br /> BEND, INDIANA, RECOGNIZING THE <br /> 2005 CELEBRATION OF JUNETEENTH <br />THTH <br /> ON JUNE 17 THROUGH JUNE 19 <br /> AND ENCOURAGING CITIZENS TO <br /> PARTICIPATE IN THE MANY <br /> JUNETEENTH COMMUNITY <br /> ACTIVITIES <br />Whereas, the Common Council of the City of South Bend, Indiana, recognizes that on <br />thth <br />the 19 day of June in 1865, the last slaves in America were freed and that June 19 has been <br />nationally referred to as “Juneteenth” representing the joy of freedom which welcomes the <br />opportunity for new beginnings; and <br />Whereas, the Common Council notes that many individuals and organizations such as the <br />South Bend Chapter of the Indiana Black Expo, the Minority Health Coalition of St. Joseph <br />County, the South Bend Branch of the NAACP, the Urban League of South Bend, the Ministerial <br />th <br />Alliance and Wells Fargo Bank have been working together on the upcoming events for the 6 <br />th <br />Annual Juneteenth Weekend Celebration in our community on June 17 through June 19th <br />Working Together Works” <br />whose theme will be “; and <br />Whereas, the City of South Bend, Indiana, believes that all persons should have the <br />opportunity to have an effective voice for educational, social and economic advancement so that <br />our community will continue to grow and prosper and as a result this year’s Juneteenth <br />Celebration will compliment the South Bend Chapter of the Indiana Black Expo’s “Staying <br />Alive in 2005” campaign which will promote the overall health of African Americans. <br />Now, therefore, be it resolved, by the Common Council of the City of South Bend, <br />Indiana, as follows: <br />3 <br /> <br />
