The matter of traffic condition at Lincoln Way East, Jefferson <br />Boulevard and Carroll Street was discussed. It was regularly moved, <br />seconded and carried that the traffic signal regulating traffic on <br />Carroll Street be eliminated and that stop sign be placed on Carroll <br />Street and Lincoln Way East to control traffic coming from the south. <br />FIRE DEPARTMENT - Chief Freeh present: <br />The matter of fire protection in Clay Township and also Ardmore in <br />Portage.Township was discussed with the Chief and it wasiregularly moved, <br />seconded and carried that these suburbs pay for the fire I 'protection <br />rendered, calls to be responded to only upon the request of the Trustee <br />of each Township or his representative. It was agreed that a charge of <br />$200.00 per year-be made and that until such an appropriation could be <br />set up by the Township, with the understanding that they proceed <br />immediately tomake such an arrangement, the Fire Chief was.instructed <br />to respond to calls for fire protection. <br />Applications for position on the Fire Department were received from <br />r <br />Lee Tames, Leonard Arthur Wheatley and Murlin H. Brown and were ordered <br />placed on file. <br />POLICE DEPARTMENT - Chief Lane present: <br />The matter of traffic situation at olive Street and Western Avenue <br />was discussed and it was decided to make Western Avenue a preferential <br />street and to place stop signs on Olive Street both north and south <br />sides of Western Avenue. <br />In reference to special police commissions issued to represen- <br />tatives of business houses, factories and merchants, the Board decided <br />. that such special police commissions shall be issued if the applicant <br />comes with proper credentials, with the understanding that in all such <br />cases the Company represented must either furnish the Board of Public <br />Safety with a surety bond or must file with the Board of Public Safety a <br />letter stating that the applicant has been bonded by themselves and that <br />they will assume all responsibility for his activities. <br />In the case of special police commissions to be issued outside.of <br />South Bend, it was decided that no bond shall be required <br />the City of whom <br />but that a letter shall be furnished stating that the men to wh <br />special police authority is given are in their employ and that they <br />assume full responsibility for their actions. <br />The Chief brought UP the question of protection for school children <br />at certain hours of the day and suggested that men who are now working.. <br />under W.P.A. Program might be called upon to perform the duties of <br />Board authorized the Chief to get <br />and the <br />protecting school children, <br />in touch with the proper officials of the W.P.A. and ascertain if such <br />an arrangement is possible. <br />I <br />-MEETING <br />December 2, 1935 <br />Regular meeting of the <br />Board of <br />Public Safety was held on Monday, <br />December 2, 1935, at 9:00 A. <br />M., All <br />members were present. <br />Minutes of previous meeting <br />were read and approved. <br />Requisitions bearing numbers 08725 to 08754 were approved. <br />Claims <br />from the following suppliers <br />amounting to.$1,204..63 were approved, also <br />payrolls in the amount of.016,719.98. <br />Electric Construction Co. <br />$27.00 <br />Gafill Bookbinding Co. <br />$18.00 <br />'Hamilton Rubber Mfg.
