M. when it collided with a
street car at'the corner of South Bend Avenue and Hill Street, injuring
three firemen, one of whom has since passed away. The Chief reported
that the cause of this accident was due mainly to the depressed
condition of the bricks between the rails of the street car track
combined with the wet pavement, that the engine was travelling slowly as
it was filling in and that the rear wheels did not leave the tracks due
to the above condition, causing the engine to skid into the street car
with the above result. Approximate cost of repair to No. 7 Engine will
be $150.00.
The Chief stated that, in his opinion, it would be well to dis-
continue filling in from one Station to another on first alarms and that
he would like to be authorized to hold up filling in until the second
alarm. After discussing this matter, the Board agreed with him and
authorized him to follow this procedure. This will necessitate making
new running cards at a very nominal expense, which was authorized.
The Board passed the following Resolution and instructed that the
same be spread upon the Minutes of o of the sam.eito and
he bereaved family of
be instructed to transmit a copy
John Howard:
WHEREAS Almighty God, in His all knowing Providence, has seen fit
to remove from the ranks of the Fire Department John F. Howard and
WHEREAS the said John F. Howard has distinguished himself, his
family and.his City by noteworthy service as a member of the Fire
Department; and said service being greatly appreciated by all the
residents of said City and City Officials, it is the will of this Board
that an expression of sympathy and of the high esteem held by this
Board of the said John F. Howard be transmitted to his widow and that a
copy of this Resolution be spread on the Minutes of this Board.
Given under my hand and seal this 8th day of October 1935.
BOARD OF PUBLIC WORKS
I
