I <br />22 <br />MEETING September 3, 1935 <br />Regular meeting of the Board of Public Safety was held Tuesday, <br />September 3, 1935 at 9:45 A. M. Mr. Hunter was absent. <br />Minutes of meeting of August 26th were read and approved. <br />Claims in the amount of $544.57, from the following suppliers, were <br />approved for payment: <br />No. Indiana Public Service Co. <br />Frank S. Wyman & Co. <br />53.46 <br />33.62 <br />The Gamewell Co. <br />7.56 <br />POLICE DEPARTMENT - Chief Lane present: <br />The Chief presented his monthly report of the activities of his depart- <br />ment, which were fully discussed. <br />In reference_to the Mayor's letter in regard to gambling devices <br />referred to in previous meeting, the matter was discussed and the Board <br />instructed the Chief to use his judgment as to such devices and to bring in <br />one or two'that in his judgment should not. be permitted and endeavor to have <br />the cases filed in the Circuit Court, so that the Court may decide whether <br />or not such particular devices are classified as gambling. <br />I I <br />The Chief reported that the situation in the 900 block on Portage Avenue, <br />opposite the Ward Baking Company plant had been corrected by the employees <br />there parking on Bakery premises and on streets adjacent to the premises. <br />The Secretary brought up the report of an accident on Car No. 3, <br />occupied by Officers Tholander and Rzepka, and a discussion was postponed <br />until a later meeting when the President of the Safety Board would be <br />present. <br />The Secretary reported a complaint made by William Hagey of 822 Lincoln <br />Way East that a water meter pipe at 77.8 Lincoln Way East was protruding <br />about one and one half inches and that this was a serious hazard and accident <br />might result. Mr. Hagey stated that he had complained to the dater Works <br />about it but that they had made no effort to correct it and that he was <br />bringing the matter to the Board as a safety measure.. This was referred to <br />the Chief of Police to investigate and later to be referred to the Chairman <br />of the Water Works Board if found necessary. <br />_The Secretary made a report of a conversation with Officer Vernon Ellis <br />in regard to a charge made to him by the City Cemetery last February which <br />he has failed to pay. The report on file also outlines his financial <br />situation and apparent inability to pay the account very fast, however he <br />has agreed'to pay $1.00 each pay day which the Board has agreed to accept <br />until January lst after which other arrangements will be determined upon. <br />The matter was referred to the Chief of Police to call in Officer Ellis and <br />talk to him regarding the matter. <br />Special Police Officer's commission requested by James Beagles of <br />2463 Meade Street was not recommended. <br />Application for the Police Department of Robert Henry, colored, was <br />ordered placed on file. <br />FIRE DEPARTMENT - Chief Freeh present: <br />Bids on the No. 3 Chassis and old batteries were received, showing <br />that out of six bids Max Spiegel of 410 LaPorte Avenue was the highest <br />who offered 450.00. It was regularly moved, seconded and carried that this <br />bid be accepted. <br />The Chief requested privilege of having typewriter used in the Fire <br />Department repaired, also to have six chairs used in the various departments <br />repaired, which the Board authorized. <br />0 <br />
