Mr. McMahon explained that, in view of the <br />fact that the project would involve local funding, some of the <br />new construction projects would be set back a year or so. He <br />stated that the Colfax Bridge and Twyckenham Bridge projects, <br />however, would not be affected by the Sample Street project as <br />far as funding. He indicated that the county was moving ahead <br />on its portion of the Sample Street project. Upon a motion made <br />by Mr. McMahon, seconded by Mr. Hill and carried, the agreement <br />was approved. <br />APPROVAL OF MONTESSORI SCHOOL FOOT PACE <br />The Board received a recommendation from the Bureau of Traffic <br />and Lighting approving the request of the Montessori School for <br />its second annual Spring Classic Foot race on May 4, 1980, <br />commencing and ending at Pinhook Park at 12:30 p.m., subject <br />to the following: That the race be manned by Civil Defense <br />Personnel to assist at the crossings of Riverside and Angela and <br />the turn - around point at Riverside and Michigan, and that the <br />parties involved contact Captain James Sweitzer no later than <br />the week of March 31, 1980, to confirm the assignment of traffic <br />personnel (Civil Defense) to assist in the foot race. The request <br />for the closing of Riverside Drive for the race was not recommended <br />by the Bureau of Traffic and Lighting. Upon a motion made by Mr. <br />McMahon, seconded by Mr. Hill and carried, the request was approved <br />subject to the above conditions. 11r. McMahon stated that the <br />closing of Riverside Drive as requested would not be permitted. <br />APPROVE REQUEST TO DESIGNATE OLD U.S. 31 AS BUSINESS U.S. 31 <br />Mr. Ralph J. Wadzinski, Manager of the Bureau of Traffic and <br />Lighting, submitted his recommendation to the Board to officially <br />approve the request to re- designate "old" U.S. 31 as Business <br />U.S. 31, and to submit said request to the Indiana State Highway <br />Commission, in concurrence with St. Joseph County, the Town of <br />Roseland, the City of Niles and Berrien County. Mr. McMahon <br />stated that meetings will be held with representatives from <br />the State of Michigan in an effort to try and resolve this <br />matter since approval had not been obtained by that public agency. <br />Upon a motion made by Mr. McMahon, seconded by Mr. Kernan and <br />carried, the Board approved the recommendation for the preparation <br />of a formal letter of request to the State Highway Commission <br />for the re- designation. <br />APPROVE REQUEST FOR PROCESSION (ST. PATRICK'S PARISH) <br />The Board received the request of St. Patrick's Parish for a <br />Palm Sunday procession on March 30, 1980, involving parishoners <br />from St. Patrick's Church and St. James Episcopal Church. Part <br />of the group will proceed east from the parking lot on Washington <br />Street to Lafayette and north on Lafayette to St. James Cathedral, <br />and part of the group will cross Washington and process south on <br />Taylor to St. Patrick's. Permission had been obtained from the <br />Continental Restaurant System to hold the service on the Washington <br />Street parking lot of Tippecanoe Place. It was indicated that <br />the procession would start at approximately 10:15 a.m. In view <br />of the fact that time was a critical factor, Mr. McMahon made <br />a motion to approve the request subject to concurrence by the <br />Bureau of Traffic and Lighting and the Traffic Division of the <br />Police Department. <br />1 <br />
