100 Navarre Place I Memorial Hospital and Health System I South Bend, IN
- 0
T _1
Size
385,000 GSF
Completion Date
November 2001
Medical offices blend with
historic neighborhood
The six -story Navarre Place artfully ad.
dresses the realities of a tight site with
the desire for a large medical office
building and architecture that respects
its historic neighborhood.
Physician groups located on the up-
per three floors help patients move
quickly among offices and ambulatory
services. The lower three floors contain
public spaces and parking.
Complementary practices located on
the same floors increases efficiency for
patients and doctors. Natural light and
soft wood tones enhance the environ-
ment. Above- and below- street connec-
tions with surrounding buildings help
physicians move quickly and comfort-
ably between the hospital and office.
i
A pedestrian plaza spans the areas
with park benches and landscaping,
easing the transition between the exist
ing hospital and the new facility, Retail
space and a street -level coffee shop
create a sense of community.
The fagade references surrounding
historic buildings and the nearby St.
Joseph River while establishing a
statement on the major thoroughfare.
Three colors of brick masonry outline
the functional areas of the building.
Architectural elements disguise the
rooftop mechanical penthouse.
