Hurwich was absent. <br />Minutes <br />of the previous meeting were <br />read and approved. Andrzejewski, rep- <br />resenting the Fireman's Association and Arthur A. May, representing the <br />City Attorney in the absence of Mr. I. A. Hurwich. A letter from the. <br />Fire Chief,'addressed to the Board, under date of September 11, 1953, <br />recommending a penalty of loss of four days pay for Firemen Richard <br />Klimczewski and Stephen Danielowicz, Jr. was then examined, and these <br />men were called before the Board singly to give their version of the <br />altercation in which they were involved while on duty at Fire Station #4$ <br />on the night of September 10th. Following these hearings, both men were <br />called before the Board, reprimanded and warned that involvement in <br />another disturbance of this nature would have serious consequences for <br />them, and ordered back to duty. <br />POLICE DEPARTMENT: <br />In the absence of the Chief of Police, Captain M. J. Voelkel appeared <br />before the Board and presented a request that the Police Pistol Team be <br />granted permission to attend the State Matches at the Putnamville State <br />Police Post, September 16th and 18th. The Board granted its permission <br />with the stipulation that it is subject to cancellation in the event of an <br />emergency. <br />The Board then took up the matter of the enforcement of City Ordinance <br />No. 3921 and directed Captain Voelkel,in the absence of Chief of Police <br />Gillen, to proceed with rigid enforcement of this ordinance. <br />Captain Voelkel then brought to the attention of the Board, the urgent . <br />need for a 37" power lawnmower for use at the Pistol Range and presented <br />quotations from a South Bend firm and an Elkhart firm, quoting on-the <br />identical make of mower, equipped with sulky. The Board accepted the <br />lowest and best proposal and directed the Clerk to issue the required <br />purchase order. <br />The Board examined the Police Department Application of Clifford La <br />Verne Markham and ordered application to be placed on file. <br />The Board re- considered the Police Department Applications of Billy. <br />J. Hoover and Wayne E. Marshall and ordered these applications returned <br />to files pending further consideration in the event of vacancies. <br />Petition for a street light on the northeast corner of Belmont Avenue <br />and Greenlawn Avenue, under date of September 9, 1953, was examined and <br />referred.to Supt. Ira Hunsberger for investigation and report. <br />Petition, dated September 9, 1953, for a street light on the east side <br />of Greenlawn Avenue, opposite the south curb line of Hoover Avenue, was <br />examined and referred to Supt. Ira Hunsberger for investigation and report. <br />A letter from former Mayor Fred W. Keller, calling attention to the <br />need of improved lighting at the northwest corner of Greenlawn Avenue and <br />
