POLICE DEPARTMENT: <br />Chief of Police, Richard J. Gillen, being present, the chairman of <br />the Board immediately took up with the Chief the matter of enforcement <br />of load limits in connection with the excessive truck traffic on,West <br />Indiana Avenue, between Prairie Avenue and Olive Street. This situation <br />was brought to the attention of the Board through motion made by Council - <br />man,Korpal in the meeting of the Common Council, Monday, April 27, 19531 <br />duly seconded and carried,to refer to the Board,a petition from West <br />Indiana Avenue home owners calling for such enforcement. The matter was <br />given some discussion and the Chief of Police agreed to put on duty a <br />motorcycle patrolman in.this particular section of the city, with.a view <br />to control of this traffic to a degree that will minimize the complaints <br />of the petitioners. <br />Chief Gillen next presented the Police Department application of <br />Louis W.,Kaufman, a former City of South Bend police officer and recommended <br />his appointment to the Police Department to become effective May 5, 1953•'. <br />This application, having the further recommendation of Mayor John A. Scott, <br />and applicant having successfully passed the,physical examination, the <br />Board approved the appointment accordingly. <br />The Police Department applications of Robert A. Buzolich, 2ygmunt C. <br />Podlas, and G. L. Weis were examined by the Board and ordered placed on <br />file. <br />The application for Police Auxiliary School Patrol,of Edna Mae <br />Marshail.was examined by the Board and ordered placed on file. <br />A petition for a street light on South Chicago Street, between Ford <br />and Huron Streets, was examined by the Board and referred to ira Hunsberger, <br />Superintendent of the Electrical Department for investigation and report.. <br />A petition calling for the installation of two street lights on <br />Warren Street, one at the alley intersection north of Prairie Avenue, and <br />one at the intersection of.Warren and ,Delaware Streets, was examined by <br />the Board and referred to Superintendent Hunsberger for investigation <br />and report. <br />There being no further business to come before the Board, the <br />meeting was adjourned at 11:45 A.
