PUBLIC AGENDA SESSION <br />JUNE 2 2010 42 <br />The Board of Public Safety met in the Public Agenda Session at 8:02 a.m. on Wednesday, June 2, <br />2010 with President Juanita Dempsey, and Board Members Patrick D. Cottrell, Laura Vasquez, and <br />Eddie Miller present. Board Member Bruce BonDurant was absent. Also present were Police Chief <br />Darryl Boykins, Fire Chief Howard Buchanon, and Board Attorney Thomas Bodnar. <br />The meeting was held in the Common Council Chambers, 4f1' Floor, County City Building, South <br />Bend, Indiana. <br />Board members discussed the following items from that list. <br />- Police Selection Panel Recommendation <br />Chief of Police Darryl Boykins informed the Board that this is the first time they have had <br />Korean and Japanese candidates sworn in on the Police force. He noted that three of the <br />candidates come from the Indiana University Police Department and already graduated from <br />the Police Academy. <br />- Commendation — Pump Engineer John Jennings <br />Fire Chief Howard Buchanon commended Engineer Jennings for his professional response <br />and life saving actions while off -duty at a local golf course. He noted that Engineer Jennings <br />had to shock the unconscious, pulseless victim twice and perform chest compressions to <br />bring back his pulse. Chief Buchanon noted he did not even know about the actions of <br />Engineer Jennings, nor did anyone else on the Fire Department until the Director of Golf <br />informed those present at the South Bend Park Board Meeting. Chief Buchanon applauded <br />Engineer Jennings for his modesty in not bragging about his heroics. <br />- Agreement — Charge No. 2010 -02 <br />Board Attorney Tom Bodnar stated after consulting with his attorney,. Captain Paul <br />Chlebowski agreed to accept Chief Buchanon's recommended discipline. Mr. Bodnar <br />informed the Board they still have the right to reject the recommendation and reset the <br />hearing of Charge 2010 -02. He noted if they accept the Agreement as presented, he will draw <br />up the Findings of Facts for approval at today's meeting also, <br />ADJOURNMENT <br />There being no further business to come before the Board, President Dempsey declared the meeting <br />adjourned at 8:15 a.m. <br />......._..... <br />ATTEST: <br />nda M.
