South Bend Redevelopment Commission
Regular Meeting –April 9, 2010

never disclosed that they working on behalf
of the City. We just thought that Cressy and
Everett wanted the property for development
purposes and I personally told them that the
property was not for sale.) Since my parents
have no intention of moving, we ignored the
letter. We didn’t hear any more until March
26 when a letter from the City arrived.

Mr. Keszei
: My parents are 86 and 88, soon
to be 87 and 89. They built their home in
1958. Andrew Toth, a prominent architect,
designed and built my parents’ home. It was
a beautiful, fully brick, unique home. You
will not find another in South Bend. My
parents love their home and they love the
area. They have been over there for fifty
years. My Dad has a garden there and I’ve
maintained it. They want to remain there
until their passing dates. I feel that the City
has not planned well. They allowed Erskine
Plaza to be built in the area, large stores such
as Mernard’s and Martin’s grocery store are
part of the Erskine Plaza. They allowed them
to put in a huge parking lot, no wonder there
is no place for the water to go. The City’s
poor planning should not constitute the
destruction of my parents’ home in order to
put in a retention pond. The City should look
for another location for the retention pond,
one which will not ruin a residential area. It
would appear to me that it would be a good
idea to place it more near to the bypass rather
than a residential area. The City wants the
retention pond to be in a residential area.
There are homes with children in the area.
The River of Life Church and school are in
this area. The school playground is very
close to my parents’ property. This would be
a dangerous situation if a child were to
wander off. Even a fence would not prevent
an adventurous child from getting into the
19
