South Bend Redevelopment Commission
Regular Meeting –April 9, 2010

people know how to golf in South Bend
because we get a ton of golf balls. Arthur
Gray lives right across from us, and we have
gotten to know him as well. We always find
ourselves just in each other’s yards, just as
neighbors do. My point with all of these little
examples about our neighborhood is this is
what makes a neighborhood. My husband
and I have some concerns about the plans
involving our neighborhood. First, let me be
clear about one thing, I am not here to raise a
big stink. I am not here to be difficult or
make a bunch of demands. I am just here to
give you a perspective about this project you
may not have thought about. All I ask is, that
as I briefly go over my concerns, you listen
with an open mind and heart and try to put
yourselves in the shoes of my husband and
myself and our son. The first concern we
have is the loss of community within our
neighborhood that is going to take place.
Albeit a small community, it is still a
community. Mr. Arthur Gray and ourselves
will be the only people left living on
Hawbaker Street. To us, that greatly reduces
one of the top reasons we bought the house in
the first place. If these ponds had already
been in place when we looked at the house
we never, ever would have purchased the
property. Our fear is having to try to sell our
house in the future. I would find it hard to
believe someone would purchase a residence
that is surrounded by commercial things,
where a little neighborhood once stood. We
have a fear selling commercially would not
work either because it is going to be too
small of a parcel for businesses to then want.
As you can see it would only be only us and
possibly the residence next to us, which is the
church.

The second concern is the value of our
13
