PUBLIC AGENDA SESSION MARCH 10 2010 17
The Board of Public Safety met in the Public Agenda Session at 8:05 a.m. on Wednesday, March 10,
2010 with President Juanita Dempsey, and Board. Members Patrick D. Cottrell, Bruce BonDurant,
and Laura Vasquez present. Board Member Eddie Miller was absent. Also present were Police Chief
Darryl Boykins, Fire Chief Howard Buchanon, and Board Attorney Thomas Bodnar.
The meeting was held in the Common Council Chambers, 4t' Floor, County City Building, South
Bend, Indiana.
Board members discussed the following item(s) from that list:
Police Selection Panel Recommendation
Board Attorney, Thomas Bodnar, informed the Board that the list they had previously
received of recommendations listed eight (8) individuals. One of them, Nathan Beagle, has
decided to accept employment elsewhere so the list is now for seven (7) individuals. Chief
Boykins stated that Mr. Beagle has accepted a job in Ft. Wayne. Chief Boykins noted this is
the first seven (7) individuals to be sworn in and in a few months there will be another group
to swear in, making the total approximately thirteen (13). The current seven (7) individuals
will be attending the Police Academy for three (3) months before they are actually working
the streets.
Charges 2009 -05 and Charges 2010 -01
Board Attorney Thomas Bodnar stated he has been in touch with all attorneys involved in the
two separate cases. He has secured some dates where everyone will be available. Should the
Board decide to hear Charges 2009 -05, the only date when everyone will be available is April
13, 2010. Mr. Bodnar noted the Board has to decide whether they will hear Charges 2009 -05
first. He stated he has three availability dates for Charges 2010 -01, including April 13, 2010.
Request for Medical Leave
Chief Boykins informed the Board that Captain Ronald Marciniak's request for an extension
of his medical leave is due to an infection that set in and prevented him from having surgery
last year. The surgery was delayed and now he needs more time for recovery. The Chief
noted Captain Marciniak has used up all of his sick and vacation time.
ADJOURNMENT
There being no further business to come before the Board, President Rodriguez declared the meeting
adjourned at 8:15 a.m.
BOARD OF PUBLIC SAFETY
Juanita Dempsey, President`
Patrick D.
