This being the date set for hearing on IM ROVEVITEINT RESOLUTION NO. 2501 for the re - <br />surf aahg of Jefferson Blvd. between Eddy Street and Greenlasm Avenue, after. discussing <br />the matter further, action was delayed until 'Wednesday, August 16, 1939, at 9 00 A.Y_ <br />A petit`_ on signed by property owners in the vicinity of the 2000 block Surest Sample <br />Street was sbmitted to the Board requesting abatement of smoke, dust, noise and nuisane <br />caused by an asphalt mixing plant located in that vicinity. The matter was referred to <br />the City Attorney. <br />STREET DEP.AR1I7,TENT: 1,111r. ZmudzL nski was present and matters pertaining to his department <br />were discussed. <br />The Board of Public Works entered into a rental agreement with the American Steel <br />Dredge Company, Inc. for the rental of a Zeph-Air Compressor mounted on a two wheel <br />pneumatic tired trailer, 2 spaders and 4 � 50 ft. lengths of Air hose with 12?C couplings <br />at �150.00 per month, with the stipmo <br />ulation that in the event the City shall pay an aun <br />in rental equal to the.purchase price of t2,063.20, then title is to vest in the Lessee. <br />li A complaint was received from Burton S. Haswell to the effect that water and filth <br />ij have come into his basement from the sewers in Navarre Place for the first time in nine- <br />teen years. This matter was tkken up with the Street. Commissioner, who reported that he <br />y had received a ccpy of the letter and that the condition had already been corrected. He <br />stated that the sewer had been cleaned but that the trouble has resulted from the unusua <br />piount of rainfall which we have had this sum::ler and the inadequacy. of the sewers to <br />. terry_ the extra load. A _-letter.. was diremted, to-,141r. Haswell explaining the situation. <br />A petition from residents in the five and six hundred blocks of East Broadway was <br />received relative to the inability of the main sewer in that vicinity to carry the load. <br />This petition was referred to 14r. Zmudzinski for investigation and report. <br />STREET LIGHTING: 1vIr. Qualls was present and a petition for the installation of a street <br />light at the corner of Donald Street and Hoke Street was received and referred to him as <br />well as petitions for lights at Ruskin and Emerson and at the intersection of Emerson <br />and HIldreth. <br />; <br />" ENGINEERING DErA -1ENT: A -- petition for the installation of an intercepting sewer from <br />i! 26th Street to Ironwood Drive by the construction of said sewer on property of the pe- <br />titioners or on the water's edge was referred to the Engineer for investigation and re- <br />port. <br />A remonstrance against any further action in the matter of installing an i nter- <br />cepting sewer from the St. Joseph River north on 26th Street to Pleasant Street and west <br />on Pleasant Street to the River's edge was received and referred to the Engineer for in- <br />vestigation and report. <br />There being no further business to come before the meeting, the meeting was adjourned at <br />12:05 P.P;i. <br />A <br />O LERK <br />. SPECIAL 11IEETING--Augu <br />At a special meeting of the Board of Public Works held on August 16, 1939, at 9:00 <br />A.M. for the purpose of acting on IMPROVEDi"1ENT RESOLUTIONd NO. 2501, the Board, having <br />been informed that the property owners on Jefferson Blvd. from Eddy Street east to <br />Greenlawn Avenue have unanimously agreed to contribute �,p.60 per square yard for mater- <br />ials so that this street can be paved under a W.P.A. general street improvement program, <br />preliminary improvement resolution No. 2501 is now rescinded and rejected by t he Board. <br />The meeting remained open pon 9:30 A.-.., the time being set for further hearing on <br />the garbage contract bids. <br />This being the date set for invarding the contract for garbage collection and dis- <br />posal for the, next five years, the Board having received many calls and letters from <br />tgxpayers asking for collection on the twice -weekly basis during the four summer months <br />and to let the contract on that basis to the lowest bidder would mean an increase of <br />approximately $4, 650.00 on the budget item for garbage collection, w=zich w oilld require <br />a special Couneil meeting to change the estimated budget item and to publish it accor- <br />dingly, it was decided by the Board, after conference with The Honorable lMayor, to call <br />a special meeting of the Council and obtain its obinion as to whether the contract <br />should be let to the low bidder on the basis of twice weekly collection during the <br />summer months in covered bodies to be furnished by the contractor, or if the contract <br />should be let to the lowest bidder on the __resent basis of collection.
