The Honorable. Redevelopment Commission
February 16, 2010
Page Two
We propose this use will be more compatible to the surrounding neighbors
consisting of Bosch to the south, single-family residential homes to the west, and
the Kennedy water playground and park to the north and east. The shelter will
include outdoor courtyards surrounded by the building. No animals or runs will be
visible to the public.
Our department in partnership with C.A.R.E. Community Animal Rescue Effort of
the City of South Bend has worked with Tom Farny, architect from Grinsfelder
Associates Architects of Fort Wayne, Indiana to design an approximate 9500
square feet shelter which will consist of a complete remodeling of the existing
building, adding a pitched roof and additions to the structure for the kennels.
While this architect firm is located in Fort Wayne, this firm was employed due to
their previous experience designing and building 7 animal shelters in the state of
Indiana. These shelters include Fort Wayne, Hendricks County and Bluffton.
We have attached elevation drawings, site plan and a photo of the current
location for your review. We have also attached the responsibilities that South
Bend Animal Care and Control have to the community. We look forward to our
partnership with the Redevelopment Commission in developing this location.
Sincerely,
,~ " <_
atherine Toppel, C.C.O.
Director
