<br />A regular meeting of the Board of Public Works was held Monday, June 27, 1955, at
<br />10:00 A. M. Etb J'. Ai' -Bickel -was absent. Minutes of the previous meeting were read and
<br />approved. Claims of the following suppliers, in the total amount of $23,338.29, were
<br />approved and ordered paid:

<br />The Board first examined and approved plans for the construction of
<br />;on Union Street, from MacArthur Avenue to Ironwood Drive.
<br />a local sewer
<br />The Board next discussed and agreed upon employing Russell Oberlin, Realtor, to
<br />,furnish an appraisal on the proposed purchase of right of way for the extension of Colfax
<br />Avenue east to Ironwood -Drive, in an endeavor to arrive at an amicable settlement of the
<br />;current controversy involving a certain portion of the required land to effect such right
<br />of way.
<br />The Board next considered and ordered the purchase of a quantity of lumber and
<br />.masonite required by the Traffic Engineer's Department, as covered by Purchase Order
<br />BW7971.
<br />Then appeared before the Board, Rev. Ray G. Jones, pastor of Christ's Temple,
<br />requesting permit to erect a tent for revival services. In view of the pastorts state-
<br />ment that public address system would be limited in volume for the tent and the immediate
<br />;vicinity of the tent, the Board offered no objection and granted permission, stipulating
<br />'that the tent and its location must be cleared with the City Fire Inspector, and suitable
<br />toilet facilities must be provided.
<br />The Board next considered the request for permission of the Samaritan Army to con-
<br />duct religious services on downtown street corners Saturday nights only, throughout the
<br />'summer months, and their further request for permission for a revival tent to be erected
<br />at various locations at various times throughout the city; services to be conducted on
<br />Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays, evenings only. The Samaritan Army having certifica-
<br />tion of Articles of Admission from the Secretary of State, dated May 26, 1955, the
<br />.Board granted permission for both requests with the stipulation that Pastor Alex Karsas,
<br />must clear also with the City Fire Inspector in the matter of the tent and its locations,
<br />;and must provide suitable toilet facilities. In the matter of the street corner services
<br />.the Board stipulates these are to be conducted at the curb and in no way impede the flow
<br />of traffic.
<br />The Board next examined and approved Contract Supplement No. 3, Contract 5A,
<br />Paschen Contractors, Inc., contractor; supplement having been recommended for acceptance
<br />by Consoer, Townsend & Associates, consulting engineers.

<br />The Board examined and ordered filed Certificate of Insurance, dated June 14, 1955,
<br />submitted by Michigan Mutual Liability Company for Rieth-Riley Construction Company, Inc.
<br />Covering Contract No. 1 - Sample Street.
<br />Petition, dated June 8, 1955, to improve 29th Street by the construction of concret
<br />pavement from the north line of Northside Boulevard to the south line of Pleasant Street,
<br />was examined and referred to the City Engineer for investigation and report.
<br />The Board next considered the matter of failure on the part of George Swiatowy to
<br />!abate the dust nuisance and health hazard caused by the McNamara Freight Lines, use of
<br />,premises leased from Mr. Swiatowy at 1530 S. Walnut Street. The Board directed immediate
<br />:,notification of Mr. Swiatowy that unless the situation is corrected not later than June
<br />29th, affidavit will be filed and warrant issued for his arrest.
<br />A supplementary contract in connection with repair of the Ironwood Drive Bridge
<br />:was next examined. The funds for the completion of this work not having.been made
<br />,available, the matter of signing of contract was deferred accordingly.
<br />The Board next examined and found to be in order option for the purchase of real
<br />;estate, dated June 22, 1955, and bearing the signatures of I. A. Harwich, for the City
<br />;South Bend, Donald 0. and Mary Edna Colwell, as sellers, and Elizabeth Fletcher Allen,
<br />,representing the law firm of Allen & Allen.
