<br />The petition for the improvement of 35th Street was examined by the Board and referred
<br />to the City Engineer forxecommendation. The City Engineer, being present, made the
<br />recommendation that the petition be granted.- The Board then directed that the firm of
<br />Wilbur' H. Gartner & A`ssociates prepare general details, drawings, specifications, estimates
<br />and the preliminary improvement resolution for improving such part'of said street`by
<br />constructing a local sewer, and the firm was -so notified this date.
<br />ENTRY OF PETITION PRESENTED
<br />The Board of Public'Works and Safety hereby receives `and places on file the Petition:,,
<br />of Leeiia Bradley and seven others for the "improvement on 36th. Street, from Jefferson
<br />Boulevard north to as far as sewer construction is possibl'e.
<br />The above petition was examined by the Board and referred to the City Engineer for
<br />recommendation. The
<br />City Engineer being present,' made the reco=endation that -the'
<br />petition be granted. The Board then directed that the firm of Wilbur H. Gartner &
<br />Associates prepare general details, drawings, specifications, estimates a.n:d the preliminary
<br />improvement resolution for improving ushc part of said street by constructing a local
<br />sewer, and the firm was so notified this date.
<br />The 'Board then proceeded with the signing of agreement to be entered into between the
<br />j'State of Indiana and the City of South Bend, Indi"ana., pertaining to the installation of
<br />traffic'signal's at the intersection of Arnold Street -and Western Avenue.
<br />Petition for a sanitary sewer on 34th Street, from Jefferson Boulevard to Washington'i.
<br />z:Avenue, was examined and referred to the City Engineer for investigation and recommendation.
<br />Waiver signed by Walter Hojnocki pertainingto the premises at 1199 Western Avenue, as
<br />affected by the proposed widening of Western Avenue, was examined and approved by the
<br />'Board.
<br />Then appeared before the Board, Mr. George Swiatowy, together with T. M. DeWitt,
<br />;vice-president of the McNamara Freight Lines. The matter of the dust nuisance created
<br />q;by the activities of the truck terminal and the lack of proper surfacing of the area
<br />were then discussed. It was brought out in the discussion that the driveway is too
<br />,,,narrow, and agreed that inspection of this driveway -will' be made by the City Engineer
<br />with a'view to correcting this condition. It was evident, after some period of dis-
<br />cussiori, that neither'party would comit themselves in the natter of the dust control,
<br />land the Board accordingly, made it known that measures must be taken to eliminate the
<br />;dust condition caused by this truck terminal, setting a dead line for June 27th, or
<br />:the Board will proceed on the basis of a health hazard, to correct the situation with
<br />no further delay.
<br />The Board then proceeded with the signing of Contract "C" for -the improvement of
<br />:Olive Street from Linden Avenue to Lincolnway West, awarded to Rieth-Riley Construction
<br />;Company, Inc., in special meeting of Friday, June 10, 1955• The Board also examined
<br />'ia.nd approved the Performance Bnnd applying to this contract.
<br />The request of O. J. Shoemaker, Inc., for permission to park their trailer -office
<br />at the site of the construction job (pgemorial Hospital Nursest Home) on West Navarre
<br />'Street was next considered by the Board and permission granted.

<br />The Board examined -blueprint of a strip of land located east of the Michigan Central
<br />Railroad Compan.yts -right-of-way and south of Angella Avenue, which Mr. Forest G. Hay
<br />offered to purchase in his letter of May 24, 1955 to the Board. In the interest of
<br />future municipal planning, the Board was in unanimous agreement not to consider the sale
<br />of this strip of land at this time, and the Clerk was directed to so inform Mr. Hay.
<br />The Board next entered into considerable discussion with Traffic Engineer, E. H.
<br />'Mliller, concerning the feasibility of twelve or fifteen minute parking meters for
<br />'passenger loading zones at certain locations, specifically mentioned as the Tower Build-
<br />ing, Sherland Building; Odd Fellows Building and Indiana & Michigan Electric Building.
<br />?It was pointed out that the problem involved was to avoid a double parking situation
<br />which twelve minute parking meters might induce.- The matter was held in abeyance for
<br />!'further study.
<br />Then appeared before the Board Mr. Clement G. Cressy and presented a petition,
<br />bearing five signatures, for the vacating of alley between North St. Louis Boulevard and
<br />North St. Peter Street, from St. Vincent Street to Napoleon Boulevard. The Board exam-
<br />ined the petition and directed the Clerk to refer it to the City Plan Commission for
<br />recommendation.
<br />The Board next examined and ordered filed certificates of insurance supplied by
<br />Santucci Construction Company of Skokie, Illinois, in connection with Intercepting
<br />Sewers, Contrac-t No. 6, and Rieth-Riley Construction Company in connection with Contract
<br />No. 1, Sample Street
<br />Excavation Bond, in the sum of $5,000.00, for Rieth-Riley Construction Company, Inc.
<br />'was examined and approved by the Board.
<br />Maintenance Bond in the sum of $2700.00, for Axel E. Anderson, was examined and
<br />approved by the Board.
<br />Maintenance Bond in the sum of $1710.00, for McIntyre & Jones, was examined and
<br />approved by the Board.
