The Board first gave consideration to the improved parking facilities provided
for the residents on East Indiana Avenue, between Miami and Leer Streets, and certain
commercial enterprises on Miami Street in the vicinity of the Indiana Avenue intersection,
and the more efficient tr affic signal operation at this intersection, due to the recent
conversion of East Indiana Avenue, from Miami to Leer Streets to one-way traffic.
Councilman Walter C. Erler, being present in protest, was assured that the improvement
in parking facilities being afforded through both sides of the street being made avail- i!
able, will more than compensate for any inconvenience caused the 9% of Indiana Avenue
traffic formerly west bound over this section of Indiana Avenue. Traffic Engineer, i
E. H. Miller, being present, was directed by the Board to eradicate, as quickly as
possible, all yellow paint from curbing, which is now to be made available for parking.
City Engineer, R. S. Andrysiak, being present, informed the Board in regard to
complaints that Street Department vehicles, equipped with redlight flasher device, are
operating these flashers when in motion, contrary to rules. The Board directed the
Clerk to bring this violation of rules to the attention of Street Commissioner, H. M.
Tomlinson.
A red light flasher device, proposed for use at the intersection of McKinley and
Greenlawn, as a warning sign to traffic when the fire apparatus is leaving Fire Station
No. 14 in response to an alarm, was demonstrated to the Board by Traffic Engineer,
E. H. Miller. It was suggested that a "try -out" installation should be made of this
type of warning device at this location, with a view to additional installations being
made where needed in the event the trial operation proves successful. Superintendent
Ira Hunsberger, of the Electrical Department, also present, was directed by the Board
to proceed with the installation.
At the request of Chester Copp, Chairman of the Seal Sale for the St. Joseph
County Crippled Children's Society, the Board advanced the date of permit for the
annual Easter Seal sale, -originally set for April 4th.to April 9th, there being no
conflicting commitment.
