Next appeared before the Board, S. C. Morse, District Supervisor, Electrical
Maintenance, New York Central Railroad. Mr. Morse first read the ordinance governing
the railroadts responsibilities relative to providing the necessary lighting for rail-
road crossings within municipal boundaries. Discussion was then given to share of
expense for the 4000 lumen lights to be placed at the Sibley Street and Florence Avenue
crossings. The Board then adopted the following resolution:
RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF PUBLIC WORKS AND SAFETY, of the city of South Bend,
Indiana, that a street light be installed at each of the intersections of
Sibley Street and Florence Avenue with the New York Central Railroad branch,
each of these two lights to be 4000 lumen. The total cost for these lights
will be twv-dollars and sixty cents ($2.60) per light per month. The Board
of Public Works, on behalf of the City of South Bend, agrees to pay seventy
cents (.70) per month per light, and we ask that the New York Central Railroad
Company pay one dollar and ninety cents per month per light.
The request of Mr. M. C. Fahler that Saturday, April 30th, be approved and set by
the Board, as White Cane Sale Day for 1955, was next considered, and there being no
,previous commitment conflicting, the Board complied with Mr. Fahlerts request and
approved the date of Saturday, April 30, 1955•
Then appeared before the Board, Street Commissioner, H. M. Tomlinson, and painting
contractor, J. W. DeLee, in the matter of contract -for the painting of Street Department
buildings entered into between the City of South Bend and contractor J. W. DeLee, under
;date of December 20, 1954, The Board determined that two coats were required under the
contract, and the City was not at fault in the contractorts failure to provide himself
with and follow specifications called for. It was agreed -contractor DeLee will complete
contract in accord with specifications.
STREET DEPARTMENT:
. Street Commissioner, H. M. Tomlinson, being present, took up with the Board matters
pertaining to his department, including accident involving Street Department employee,
Stanley Switalski.
